The interspecies distributions of Φcrit are indistinguishable from those of marine and terrestrial SMS (Extended Data Table 1), suggesting that Φ is the operative limit that most frequently acts on the warm temperature and low O2 edge of the geographical range of marine species (but see Fig. 3c).
