A recently proposed structure of an N₂-bound Mo-nitrogenase has sparked considerable attention, although the direct evidence for N₂ binding and sulfur mobilization during turnover has remained elusive. Now, additional spectroscopic and kinetic measurements further support this state and provide evidence that belt-sulfur displacement is an essential aspect of the nitrogenase mechanism.

Pericyclase enzymes are an expanding family of enzymes. Here, the authors identify the norbornene synthase SdnG, a pericyclase for the intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction between a cyclopentadiene and an olefinic dienophile to form the sordaricin norbornene structure, and reconstitute the sordaricin biosynthesis.

Controlling the component ratios of plant essential oils is challenging in their heterologous bioproduction. Here, the authors combine metabolic and enzymatic engineering strategies to achieve the production of sandalwood oil with a desirable component ratio in baker’s yeast.

Enzymes, either purified or as whole-cell biocatalysts, can be concatenated into catalytic cascades and used to produce pharmaceutically relevant molecules. This Review discusses the advantages and requirements of multistep enzyme cascades and also highlights how they can be harnessed to achieve highly sustainable and cost-efficient syntheses.

It is difficult to achieve spatiotemporal control over chemical cascade reactions. Here, the authors report on the generation of transient domains in an aqueous medium using sound induced liquid vibrations allowing for control of chemical gradients and patterns and use this to pattern nanoparticles in hydrogels.
