Functional subsystems of the macroscale human brain connectome are mapped onto a recurrent neural network and found to perform optimally in a critical regime at the edge of chaos.

The macroscale brain connectome is often partitioned into functional subsystems consisting of brain areas that have correlated activity and shared function1. These functional subsystems, or ‘intrinsic networks’, consist of sensory and motor areas, as well as areas underlying attention, motivation and executive control. The structure (topology) of intrinsic networks and their dynamics together determine computational function, but this structure–function relationship is not well understood. Writing in Nature Machine Intelligence, Suárez and colleagues2 illustrate an innovative approach to this problem using reservoir networks and empirically derived connectivity of the human brain.
