Ultrafast magneto-optical measurements for probing magnon–phonon interactions in nanomagnets

Ultra-high density data storage, spin-based random access memories, all-optical switching, magnetic sensors, and other spintronic applications require dense arrays of individual elements, which is accomplished by nanoscale patterning of magnetic material into nanomagnets. The control of magnetic properties through the coupling of mechanical and magnetic excitations is of interest for studying the interplay of the quantized spin wave (magnon) and vibrational (phonon) excitations, and for its potential use for energy-efficient straintronic applications, which reduces energy dissipation when switching the logic bits. Probing the coupled mechanical and magnetic dynamics in a nanomagnet requires a suitable experimental technique that is able to detect both magnonic and phononic responses and has the spatial and time resolution to observe individual nanomagnets in the picosecond range or better.
