Stem cell implants show promise in chronic traumatic brain injury

An interim analysis of the phase II STEMTRA trial suggests that bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) can ameliorate chronic motor deficits secondary to traumatic brain injury (TBI). Patients who had sustained a TBI at least 12 months earlier (n = 61) were randomly assigned to undergo intracranial implantation of MSCs or sham surgery. After the first 6 months of the planned 1-year follow-up period, the patients who received MSCs showed significant improvements in motor function compared with the control group.
