Gene duplication is a major source of genetic innovation, but how can we make quantitative statements about the rate and overall pattern by which it occurs during evolution? In 2000, Lynch and Conery published landmark work that comprehensively studied gene duplications using whole genomes, which were then first becoming available. Remarkably, the authors estimated the rate of duplications in genome evolution, their half-life and the pattern of selection that they experience throughout their evolution.
