Lungfish are air-breathing, lobed-fin fish that are considered the closest extant relatives of terrestrial vertebrates (tetrapods) and are thus important for understanding traits that underpin the transition from an aquatic existence to life on land. Sequencing lungfish genomes is challenging because of their extremely large size and high repetitive sequence content. Now, two studies report complete genome assemblies for two lungfish species.
