Electrostatic interactions are a major component of hydrogen bonding, but the underlying nature of an H-bond is far more complex. They are sensitive to competing interactions and solvent effects, but predicting and quantifying these is challenging. Now, Scott Cockroft and co-workers from the University of Edinburgh with Chris Baker and Kenneth Ling from Syngenta, have used synthetic molecular balances to quantify amine and amide H-bonds in competitive polar solvents.
