The first realizations of supersolids relied on a two-step process, in which a cloud of magnetic atoms is first cooled down to reach a superfluid state. Then, the tuning of the magnetic dipole–dipole interactions between the particles — a so-called interaction quench — leads to the crystallization of the gas into spatially regular ‘droplet arrays’. This technique worked well in 1D, but further studies suggested that the quench procedure may lead to a destabilization of the supersolid in 2D and higher dimensions.
