Gabriele Rainò, Lukas Novotny and Martin Frimmer discuss the approach they are pursuing at ETH Zürich to provide students with an education in quantum engineering.

The first quantum revolution, culminating with the development of integrated circuits and optoelectronic devices, has transformed our society through high-performance computing, transoceanic communication, high-speed Internet and medical devices. Nowadays, a second wave of quantum technologies is expected to impact society in a similar way. Untapped aspects of quantum physics, such as entanglement and superposition, are exploited as resources in impactful applications, including quantum sensors, novel techniques for bioimaging, quantum computing and secure communication networks (the quantum Internet).
